2022 Volkswagen Taos vs. 2021 Kia Sportage: The Taos Leaps Forward With Great Tech

The all-new 2022 Taos is ready to carve out its place in the small compact crossover segment. It offers a vehicle that is agile, perfect for smaller spaces without sacrificing comfort, and can handle its own with turbocharged power. Topped off with advanced tech and satisfying efficiency, the Taos is a great choice for Canada's driving needs.

We have received several questions about the 2022 Taos, and we introduce it here by comparing it to the 2021 Kia Sportage.

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos knows how to respond

The new 1.5-litre turbocharged engine generates 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen engineers aimed for a responsive powertrain that offers plenty of torque in both optimal and challenging road conditions. The Taos even has more torque than most Sportage grades!

The new engine also provides impressive efficiency. The Taos has a front-wheel drive fuel consumption rating of 8.4 L/100 km in the city and 6.5 L/100 km on the highway. It also earns a respectable 9.4/7.4 L/100 km with all-wheel drive models.

The Taos outshines the Sportage's fuel consumption ratings. Its larger, 2.4-litre naturally aspirated and 2.0-litre turbo engines clearly raise the results. The 2.4-litre front-wheel Sportage models rate at 10.1/7.6, and that increases to 10.7/9.0 for all-wheel drive.

Although the Sportage looks larger, the Taos actually has more cargo volume. The Taos offers 173 litres of additional cargo volume over its competitor. With all rear seats folded, the Taos expands to 1,877 litres of cargo volume behind the front seats.

The 2021 Volkswagen Taos goes big with equipment

Versatility and advanced power aren't the only features of the Taos. It includes some of Volkswagen's most advanced technologies that its bigger siblings have. The Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrument panel is fully customizable and adds a deeper level of personalization that many small crossovers don't have. The Sportage doesn't offer this tech.

You can also choose from a suite of active driver assist safety features. Available are Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Braking (Front Assist), Active Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Keeping System (Lane Assist), Adaptive Cruise Control, High Beam Control, an Adaptive Front-Lighting System, and Park Distance Control.
